Tezu, the headquarters of Lohit District, is one of the most scenic and culturally vibrant towns in eastern Arunachal Pradesh. Set amidst verdant hills and lush valleys, this charming town is known for its natural beauty, serene environment, and rich tribal culture. Located on the banks of the Lohit River at an elevation of about 185 meters, Tezu is a peaceful retreat surrounded by forests and misty hills.
Just a short drive away lies the sacred Parshuram Kund, one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites in the Northeast. Every year, thousands of devotees from across India and Nepal visit the Kund during Makar Sankranti to take a holy dip believed to wash away one’s sins.
Tezu is now much more accessible, thanks to its own airport, which became operational in 2019. Although flight frequency is still limited, it has connected Tezu to the regional air network of Arunachal Pradesh.
For better connectivity, travellers can use Dibrugarh Airport (Mohanbari), located around 167 km away, which offers regular flights to Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi, Bagdogra, Imphal, and Dimapur.
The nearest major railhead is Tinsukia (124 km / 3 hours), connected to major cities across India. Tezu is also well-linked by road from Dibrugarh (176 km) and Guwahati (630 km) via the NH-13 and NH-52 highways.
Located about 46 km (1.5 hours) from Tezu, this sacred site holds deep mythological importance. As per legend, Lord Parshuram washed away his sins here after killing his mother at his father’s command. During Makar Sankranti, thousands of pilgrims and sadhus gather here to bathe in the holy waters of the Lohit River, creating a vibrant spiritual atmosphere amid the hills.
A refreshing green escape within the town, the Botanical Garden and Tezu Park offer peaceful spots for leisure walks and nature appreciation. The gardens showcase the region’s diverse flora and are ideal for family visits.
Situated about 200 km (7 hours) from Tezu, Dong is famous as the easternmost village of India and the first place to witness sunrise in the country. Nestled amidst snow-capped mountains and lush valleys, Dong offers an unforgettable early morning spectacle.
Part of the Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary, Glow Lake is a tranquil, high-altitude water body surrounded by pristine forests. The lake can only be reached on foot through scenic trekking trails, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventurers.
Some of the closest towns to Tezu include Digboi (114 km), Tinsukia (127 km), and Dibrugarh (176 km) in Assam.
Tezu is home to several indigenous tribes, primarily the Mishmi community, known for their rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. Traditional festivals, folk music, and crafts form an integral part of their lives. The region’s cuisine reflects its tribal essence, featuring rice, smoked meat, bamboo shoots, and herbal condiments.
